SummerQuest 2

They say you are what you eat, so why would you want to eat the same old boring things? Your quest this week is to venture out of the same-old same-old and explore a new world of culinary delights! Your challenge is to try a new food that is native to Arizona; one you have never tried before! In the comments, tell us what food you tried and describe your reaction, or describe it in mouth-watering detail. Once we get five responses this quest will be complete and we can unlock the next piece of the picture!

  1. We made prickly pear cactus syrup and jelly that we made ourselves before. Mmm. sweet and sticky.

    1. I picked prickly pear fruit from my front yard it tasted delicious! but even though I was wearing gloves I got a bunch of thorns stuck in my hand.

  2. I did that years ago, and was just thinking it might be time to give it another go! The cactus in my yard is very fruitful this year.

  3. We ate salsa made from cholla buds. We also had bean soup made from Tohono O'odham tepary beans. The salsa was really delicious. It had onions, cilantro, and tomatoes in it as well. Good stuff!! The tepary beans were white and they were cooked with chicken and green chiles. I liked them because of the green chiles.

  4. Mesquite pancakes! Yum! Sorta nutty flavor.

    And, if you can find and afford it, saguaro syrup is amazing. Hard to describe, but it's sorta like a dark molasses, and it is *excellent* on ice cream or frozen yogurt.

  5. Myself and my family all tried yucca. It tastes like a potato and then has a small hint of sweet. Does need a little salt

  6. the yucca root was nasty the word yucka in the word yucca describes how the plant tasted but at least i tried it ...... and did not dye.... whatever!!!!!!
